South Carolina Spring Game

Football in the Spring. It's like breakfast for dinner, or cold pizza for breakfast. An untimely item enjoyed to the fullest of satisfaction.

College Football Spring games.  The most overrated assessment one could make of a team. Mainly because of EXTREME limit of use to starters so injury is not invited to the Spring.

Football in the Spring. Where walk-ons shine, like defensive back Jared Shaw for South Carolina, pull down great interceptions from quarterbacks that won't even be starting in the fall.

I attended the Garnet and Black Spring Game yesterday for the University of South Carolina. It was exactly that of what a Spring Game should be, a glorified practice to end the Spring for the football team.

The first play from scrimmage was a 70-yard bomb from the Connor Shaw to Damiere Byrd. The play defintley got the 34,000+ crowd buzzing. I could not tell you by exactly how many more people were there than the 2011 Spring Game ,but I do know the number had to have been fairly high.

Shaw's first toss to Byrd was nice. It was a nice type spiral on a deep throw that hit Byrd in stride. This was something I kind of criticized Connor Shaw on last year ,and I believe this was a sign of improvement.

The receiving corps for the Gamecocks looked a lot smaller without the height and size Alshon Jeffery and Jason Barnes. I'm sure the height will increase when a few of the Freshman show up. One thing I'm curious to see is whether the Freshman Shaq Rolland will jump into Alshon Jeffery's former roll, or if it will be handed down to Senior Ace Sanders.

South Carolina will help Marcus Lattimore this season with hopefully three guys that can be bruising running backs. Kenny Miles and Brandon Wilds proved in 2011 that they can run the ball hard, and the Gameocks signed a bruiser in Mike Davis. Mike Davis is the brother of former Clemson RB James Davis. Who as we all remember as Carolina fans was the "thunder" in a tandem with now Buffalo Bill CJ Spiller.

Jadaveon Clowney obviously didn't see much time yesterday, but the time he did play he looked extremely athletic. I might be stating the obvious, but there was one play where Jadaveon went into the backfield about two yards and then ran down a receiver who caught a pass on a three to five yard curl. It was pretty impressive.

Tanner McEvoy looked pretty good yesterday going 8 for12 with 132 yards and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was thrown up the sideline to DL Moore for a 63 yard touchdown.

South Carolina's defense looked soft, but it mainly consisted of back ups and many of the "stars to-be" weren't on the field at all Saturday.

Spurrier presented the offseasons award and introduced Carolina's new basketball coach, Frank Martin, in the short halftime intermission. Overall, the Ole Ball Coach seemed happy with the way his quarterbacks threw and his receivers caught the ball. He took a little shot at his defense that pulled down two interceptions and took one back for a touchdown.
