6 May MLB Power Rankings

6 May MLB Power Rankings

Here we are with another week of baseball down. Here’s my five best and five worst:

5 Best

5) Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore cracks the top five for the first time this year. They are playing scrappy baseball and being very competitive in the AL East. Jason Hammel has pitched well with a 2.09 ERA, and closer Jim Johnson has eight saves so far. After sweeping the Red Sox this weekend, the Orioles are sitting atop the Rays in the AL East.

4) Washington Nationals

The Nats pitching has continued to be phenomenal. They lead the MLB with a 2.36 ERA, and the next best is 2.76.  The Nats have got it going from their starters who have provided 21 of 27 quality starts, also the most in baseball.

3) Tampa Bay Rays

With Evan Longoria nursing a hamstring problem, Tampa has still been able to win ball games. BJ Upton has led the team well since coming back. He’s hitting .350 with 10 RBIs in 12 games. The Rays are in the middle of most stat categories, but they have found a formula to win ball games.

2) Texas Rangers

The Rangers have lost their top spot this week. They have had a rough week, going 2-5. They’ve lost three series in a row. This I believe has just been a rough patch, as they still lead in most of the batting statistics. They do have the most explosive line-up in the MLB.

1)      Los Angeles Dodgers

The Matt Kemp/Andre Ethier offensive machine has been amazing. Matt Kemp is in the top three in batting average, home runs, and RBIs in the National League. Kemp and Ethier are first and second in RBIs in the National League. The Dodgers pitching hasn’t been bad either, as the team continues to turn heads.

5 Worst

5) Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox have a pitching problem. A big one. They are 29/30 in ERA with a 5.44. They are 26/30 in opponent’s average with a .274. This is a problem the Red Sox need to address if they want to compete.

4) Chicago Cubs

The Cubbies are 24/30 in runs scored with 94. They need a new formula for success as 10-17 just isn’t cutting it.

3) Los Angeles Angels

The Angels haven’t figured out their formula for success yet. There is hope though! Albert Pujols ended his homerless streak, and I think if he gets hot, the Angels do too.

2) San Diego Padres

The Padres have the second worst average in the MLB with .220. They are already 10 games back…something’s got to give if they want to compete.

1)      Minnesota Twins

The Twins are just having a really rough year at 7-20. They are going to have to find a     better formula with Justin Morneau going on the DL.

So there you have the 6 May MLB Power Rankings. I’d like to dedicate this edition of the blog to Justin Timmerman, who was friend to many. He tragically lost his life early Saturday morning and will be dearly missed.
