I didn’t really want to do a complete pick of the SEC like I did last weekend because there really should only be three games worth looking at. The two obvious being: Florida at Miami (FL) and South Carolina at Georgia. The Carolina/Georgia game I think is the best game in the country this week, even if it is coming from a biased South Carolina fan.
I am modifying my 11 game pick to a 12 game pick, and I’m going to try to find what I think are the 12 most interesting games of week two. This is actually kind of a slow week for college football (unless you’re a fan of one of the big 3 in the SEC East). I went 10-1 last week, losing only because Mississippi States offense was driving the sputter bus. I also called the score of the UGA/Clemson dead on the money.
Yes, Clemson fans, you did deserve your top 5 ranking by beating Georgia in the premier game of the week last week. No, I wasn’t shocked that you beat them because they aren’t a team called “South Carolina” ,and Dabo is pretty good against the rest of the SEC. I called that game 38-35 right on the money. Right now, Tajh Boyd is the front runner for the Heisman in my eyes. My stock in the Heisman Race after week one however is zero. I say this because we all remember how a guy named “Gino Smith” was supposed to be a shoe-in for the trophy last year until a loss, and a guy named “Johnny Football” made an iconic play to beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
I guess it’s safe to say that at least neither of them had fake girlfriends.
So you probably want me to shut up now and make some picks…
(3) Ohio State 31 San Diego State 13
Braxton Miller and Ohio State will get it done a little better today than they did against Buffalo last week. It will be one-sided, but I think Adam Muema might be able to sneak a score in for the Aztecs.
(12) Florida 28 Miami (FL) 24
The Gators’ defense will outlast Miami, and I could see Stephen Morris turning the ball over on the final possession to seal the deal. Florida should not take this game lightly, and I don’t think they will.
Cincinnati 35 Illinois 23
Munchie Legaux and the Bearcats outplay another Big 10 team this week.
Tennessee 35 Western Kentucky 24
A lot of people are calling for this to be an upset. I picked the Hilltoppers to beat the Wildcats last weekend. I just don’t see it happening in Neyland Stadium and Tennessee is much, much farther along than Kentucky is. This being said, Bobby Petrino and company will still be able to at least try to keep pace.
Missouri 31 Toledo 26
Kirk Herbstriet picked Toledo to upset Florida in the swamp last week on College Gameday. Awful pick, I knew it would be a somewhat competitive game, but the swamp is like the Bermuda Triangle for teams trying to pull off an upset. Missouri is much weaker than Florida, but I think the quarterback play of James Franklin will get the Tigers past the Rockets.
(2) Oregon 49 Virginia 21
DeAnthony Thomas is a blur, but Virginia does look better.
Utah State 31 Air Force 21
Yes, there is an interesting Mountain West game today. I like Chuckie Keeton to have a good day against a decent Air Force team.
(19) Northwestern 21 Syracuse 17
Syracuse loses another close one to a Big 10 team this week.
(16) Oklahoma 35 West Virginia 14
Sound beating.
(17) Michigan 36 (14) Notre Dame 20
I think Michigan will be able to run the ball strong, and the Big House will be too tough of a place to play for Tommy Rees.
(15) Texas 27 BYU 10
Texas uses their stable of running backs to get a win in Provo.
(6) South Carolina 38 (11) Georgia 27
The Gamecocks may get gashed a bit early, but I think their pass rush makes Aaron Murray make some rare and poor decisions. Connor Shaw will show that he has improved playing on the road in this match-up of the week.
I think the two reasons this game didn’t get College Gameday this week are:
a) Georgia was featured last week
b) Everybody is getting butt hurt that Michigan and Notre Dame aren’t going to be playing anymore.
If Steve Spurrier wins this game he will be the first coach ever in the SEC to tally up 16 overall wins against Georgia. Spurrier was the first opposing coach to score over 50 points between the hedges with his 1995 Florida Gators team.
Thanks for the read!
