SEC+3: Week Six
Alright folks, it's that time again! Here are the week six picks:
New Mexico State vs. (14) Ole Miss
Godsey: The Rebels were exploited last week and I'm not sure that anyone was expecting the beat down they took from Florida. It just goes to show that any team in the conference can beat any other team on any Saturday in the SEC. I don't think New Mexico State is ready to pull off something big, especially in Mississippi.
The Pick: Ole Miss 62 New Mexico State 10
Griff: The Rebels' offense has obviously declined the past two weeks, but this game will allow Hugh Freeze to adjust his team accordingly.
The Pick: Ole Miss 56 New Mexico State 3
(7) LSU vs. South Carolina
Godsey: Steve Spurrier would love to take a win over LSU back to the state of South Carolina. Obviously, a win would lift a lot of spirits around Columbia. If this game were played in its original location, I might've kept the score closer. The real question is how many yards will Leonard Fournette have?
The Pick: LSU 45 South Carolina 17
Griff: I've been way too high on the Gamecocks this year, as they've shown that there's been tough shoes to fill from three extremely successful years. I've seen them play up to opponents, but they don't have a weapon like Leonard Fournette. The Gamecocks don't have an experienced quarterback to get them out of trouble on long third downs, and Pharoh Cooper and Jerell Adams are virtually the only receiving threat for South Carolina. I have to give a shout out to the conference for all the wonderful gestures that they've provided for the Gamecocks.
The Pick: LSU 38 South Carolina 20
(19) Georgia vs. Tennessee
Godsey: This would be the perfect chance for Tennessee to turn their season around. The conditions are right for Georgia to suffer a second-straight loss. I'll be honest, I would like nothing more than to see Georgia tank this game. Now let me be reasonable, Tennesse has been a disappointment so far and losing to Arkansas didn't help. We were thinking that Georgia was overrated, but they're still better than Tennessee.
The Pick: Georgia 37 Tennessee 20
Griff: Last week was rough on the Bulldogs, as Alabama's defense just suffocated Georgia's running game. Tennessee is hungry for a win and looked promising at times, but it's hard for me to feel confident picking a team that has dropped three games where they held a double-digit lead. Things will become real tense between Butch Jones and the Vols' fan base after this one.
The Pick: Georgia 27 Tennessee 21
Troy vs. Mississippi State
Godsey: The Bulldogs must rebound from the loss to A&M and prepare for Louisiana Tech. I don't want to say they can overlook Troy, but just a scan over them should suffice.
The Pick: Mississippi State 42 Troy 10
Griff: There's not going to be any kind of Trojan Horse rolling into Starkville this weekend.
The Pick: Mississippi State 45 Troy 16
Arkansas vs. (8) Alabama
Godsey: Bama didn't go anywhere folks, just ask Mark Richt. I doubt the Tide are still riding a high from last week, and that'll cause them trouble during this game. Saban will have his team focused and ready for the Razorbacks. Arkansas, however, needs to carry the momentum from last week and drop it in Bryant-Denny Stadium if they want to come out as a winner. I don't believe they'll have enough mojo to beat Alabama this week.
The Pick: Alabama 38 Arkansas 14
Griff: Alabama flexed their muscle last week in Athens, and I'm not sure if anybody expected for the Crimson Tide to lay the wood like they did against Georgia's offense. Nick Saban has his team playing at high level, and the Hogs won't be able to pull off the upset in Tuscaloosa.
The Pick: Alabama 35 Arkansas 21
(11) Florida vs. Missouri
Godsey: I don't know about y'all, but I don't believe that Florida is the eleventh-best team in the nation right now. I knew Missouri was overrated, and it seems like there is a lot of that going on throughout the top 25. I will admit that I've underestimated the Gators twice this season, and each time they've proven me wrong. I'll jump on board for now, but Florida is still overrated.
The Pick: Florida 31 Missouri 27
Griff: Maty Mauk will be suspended for the second-straight game this week, but that's not going to impact the Tigers that much, as true freshman Drew Lock settled in nicely as the starter against South Carolina last week. Florida's defense, however, isn't going to be kind to the freshman, but Missouri will be able to compete with the Gators at home.
The Pick: Florida 25 Missouri 17
(13) Northwestern vs. (18) Michigan
Godsey: For me, this game could go either way. Both teams have some quality wins, though I'd give the edge to Northwestern, but it's really hard to play in the Big House and come out victorious. I'm going to go with Michigan in a close game.
The Pick: Michigan 24 Northwestern 21
Griff: I've honestly enjoyed watching this Northwestern team compete and win some of the more difficult matchups they've faced this season. The last time I picked Michigan to lose was when they played BYU, and I got burned on that pick. I'll try to doubt the Wolverines again this week and pick Northwestern to get a huge conference win in Ann Arbor in what could be the best game of the week in all of college football.
The Pick: Northwestern 31 Michigan 30
Georgia Tech vs. (6) Clemson
Godsey: I keep picking Clemson to lose, and they keep on winning. Georgia Tech has plummeted since the loss to Notre Dame, but I think the Yellow Jackets will get it together enough to generate a good game on the road. I'm going to try one more time. You heard it here first, Georgia Tech knocks off Clemson!
The Pick: Georgia Tech 28 Clemson 27
Griff: As many times as I've seen Georgia Tech be a tough bump in the road for Clemson's season, I just can't see past the rough three weeks of straight losses where they haven't preformed well. Clemson impressed me in the trenches last weekend, and their preparation during the summer for the opener against Wofford should have them better prepared for the Yellow Jackets' triple-option attack.
The Pick: Clemson 34 Georgia Tech 24
(23) California vs. (5) Utah
Godsey: Utah has exploded into the rankings and dominated the talk at the water cooler. I don't recall a team jumping as high as Utah has in just one week. The win over Michigan was big, and the domination of Oregon was even bigger. Cal, on the other hand, has crept into the top 25. This is an unbeaten showdown and something's got to give. Okay, back to being overrated. I don't buy into Utah being better than say Texas A&M, Alabama, or even LSU. They are certainly better than California and that's why they win at home.
The Pick: Utah 38 California 17
Griff: Like Godsey stated, Utah has escalated very quickly up the top 25. The Utes get a chance to showcase themselves against a ranked opponent and get the job done.
The Pick: Utah 42 California 31
