SEC+3: Week Two Picks
The second week of this young 2017 season gives us some interesting games. Let's get right into the picks:
Eastern Kentucky vs. Kentucky
Godsey: After a road win at Southern Miss last week, the Wildcats have one more game to fix the bugs before beginning league play. They have a long road ahead of them, but a win here is big step in the right direction.
The Pick: Kentucky 38 Eastern Kentucky 10
Griff: This will be a good clean-up game for the Wildcats. Kentucky looks improved in week two.
The Pick: Kentucky 35 Eastern Kentucky 7
UT Martin vs. Ole Miss
Godsey: This game should be an easy win for the Rebels.
The Pick: Ole Miss 47 UT Martin 13
Griff: Another 400-plus yard week through the air for Shae Patterson. Rebels roll.
The Pick: Ole Miss 38 UT Martin 3
Fresno State vs. (1) Alabama
Godsey: No trouble for the Tide, but Saban's squad won't cover the 43.5 point spread.
The Pick: Alabama 49 Fresno State 7
Griff: I'm applying the Alabama 38-point rule to this game. Tide wins easy by creating a mess of turnovers.
The Pick: Alabama 38 Fresno State 14
(23) TCU vs. Arkansas
Godsey: The last time these two teams met, it was an instant classic with Arkansas pulling out the win. While this will be another great game, the fast-paced TCU offense will be too much for Arkansas. TCU wins in a close one.
The Pick: TCU 31 Arkansas 28
Griff: I'm still trying to figure out how TCU is ranked, but Arkansas will win this game on the defensive side of the ball by forcing a turnover or getting a stop late. Give me the Hogs in a close one!
The Pick: Arkansas 31 TCU 27
Indiana State @ (25) Tennessee
Godsey: After a thriller against Georgia Tech, the Vols blast Indiana State in this one.
The Pick: Tennessee 54 Indiana State 10
Griff: The "Champions of Life" flex on the Sycamores this week.
The Pick: Tennessee 42 Indiana State 7
Alabama A&M vs. Vanderbilt
Godsey: This will be a good win for Vandy before hosting Kansas State next weekend.
The Pick: Vanderbilt 37 Alabama A&M 13
Griff: Vandy will look good for the second week in a row!
The Pick: Vanderbilt 35 Alabama A&M 6
(13) Auburn vs. (3) Clemson
Godsey: Auburn will win this game by winning the battle in the trenches.
The Pick: Auburn 34 Clemson 30
Griff: Kelly Bryant looked like the real deal last week. Whichever team runs the ball better will pull this game out by staying on the field. That team will be Clemson.
The Pick: Clemson 31 Auburn 28
South Carolina vs. Missouri
Godsey: This is a huge game for both teams in my opinion. Can Drew Lock put up Madden-like numbers against an SEC defense? Is he the best QB in the SEC? Can South Carolina pick up this win on the road and prove that they’ve much improved and on their way to probably an 8 or 9 win season? Give me South Carolina, I think they are building a solid team that could make a run for the East.
The Pick: South Carolina 27 Missouri 24
Griff: I don't believe the South Carolina defense was as bad as it looked on the stat sheet last week. Gamecocks will force turnovers and run the football more efficiently. That will allow South Carolina to run away with this game late.
The Pick: South Carolina 38 Missouri 24
Nicholls vs. Texas A&M
Godsey: The Aggies suffered the worst breakdown I believe I’ve ever seen, and I watched the Super Bowl this year. They will have no trouble this week however.
The Pick: Texas A&M 56 Nicholls 7
Griff: Well, Kevin Sumlin better not lose this one...
The Pick: Texas A&M 63 Nicholls 10
Chattanooga vs. (12) LSU
Godsey: LSU routed BYU last week and looked much better than I had thought they would look. I expect much of the same this week.
The Pick: LSU 42 Chattanooga 3
Griff: LSU gets a nice tune-up week, so the Tigers can maintain "contender" status.
The Pick: LSU 45 Chattanooga 6
(15) Georgia vs. (24) Notre Dame
Godsey: UGA fans are in for a surprise when the Dawgs kick-off against the Irish. Notre Dame is much improved this year, and I think they take it at home.
The Pick: Notre Dame 27 Georgia 21
Griff: I really liked how poised Jake Fromm looked when he was shoved into action last weekend after Jacob Eason's injury. Georgia will run the ball well and create long possessions, and the Bulldogs defensive front will play a big role in getting the win.
The Pick: Georgia 27 Notre Dame 17
Mississippi State vs. Louisiana Tech
Godsey: This could be a trap game for the Bulldogs, probably not, but the road through Ruston will be more difficult than anticipated.
The Pick: Mississippi State 38 Louisiana Tech 28
Griff: This will be the Nick Fitzgerald show early, but this game will be better than people give it credit.
The Pick: Mississippi State 24 Louisiana Tech 10
OUT OF CONFERENCE SCORE PREDICTIONS
(5) Oklahoma vs. (2) Ohio State
Godsey: Ohio State 24 Oklahoma 21
Griff: Ohio State 38 Oklahoma 24
(14) Stanford vs. (6) Southern Cal
Godsey: Southern Cal 31 Stanford 30
Griff: Southern Cal 42 Stanford 38
(17) Louisville vs. North Carolina
Godsey: Louisville 35 North Carolina 21
Griff: Louisville 38 North Carolina 27
